Frequently Asked Questions

Check back here if you have any questions about what is going on in Kesem! Thank you for being a part of the team and being patient during these turbulent times!

1. Do I have to apply to be a member of Kesem?

Yes, everyone in Kesem needs to reapply to Kesem every year.  However, this application is ~extremely~ low stress!  There will be a brief written piece for you to fill out (the answers for which you can copy and paste from last year). If you have met the expectations regarding accountability and engagement laid out last year, which the vast majority of you have unless otherwise reached out to, then you have nothing to worry about.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

We have not yet solidified the timeline of when reapplications are due, so there is nothing to put on your calendars quite yet.  As soon as this is figured out, we will let you know.

2. How is this all going to work with COVID-19 restrictions?

That’s a great question, and we’re still figuring out a lot of the details! What we do know is that 1) our campers and counselors had a BLAST doing Kesem at Home (our virtual summer camp) 2) we are preparing for both physical and virtual camps for summer 2021 and 3) we’re planning all sorts of fun, virtual activities for CK Duke members. This year is going to be challenging for everyone in a lot of different ways, but your Kesem family is behind you for every step of it!

3. Can we have anyyyyyy in person events??

Unfortunately, no. We have to adhere to the Duke Compact, and as an organization, we should be proud to set an example for our peers! However, we’re sending you all the biggest virtual hugs <3

4.  When will general body applications come out, and what will the application look like?

The General Body Application will be a short written application, no more than 750 words total. We don’t have a date set for then those will be released, but expect those to come out in late September/early October.

5. I have an idea or feedback, but I’m not sure whom to tell it to.

You are welcome to tell it to any member of Exec! If you’d like to submit it anonymously, you can do so through the Suggestion Box form.

6. I have a question that wasn’t answered here, whom should I ask?

Email us at duke@campkesem.org and Shounk (Shout and/or Blank) will get back to you ASAP!

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement of Beliefs & Principles

Kesem’s mission of supporting children through and beyond a parent’s cancer, and our vision of ensuring that every child impacted by a parent’s cancer is never alone, can only be realized through an ongoing, steadfast commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in every part of our organization.

To that end, Kesem makes the following commitments:

  • To continually expand the communities we support and work with - our camper families, volunteers, staff, alumni, and supporters - with attention to engaging underrepresented communities.

  • To strive for equity in delivering a transformative, healing, and empowering experience to those communities that recognizes and embraces our differences in race, religion, ability, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression and identity, family structure, cancer stage or type, or socioeconomic status.

  • To work to ensure that every member of the Kesem community feels safe, loved, and respected.

Kesem fulfills its commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion through daily efforts in the following areas:

  • Hiring and Professional Development

  • Camp and Year-Round Programming

  • New Program Development

  • Program Evaluation

  • Chapter Expansion

  • Recruitment of camper families, volunteers, board members and supporters

These efforts are vital to Kesem’s continued success and will be pursued with passion and a lasting pledge to continually improve.
